Stop. Breathe. Relax!
Here’s the things you really don’t need to worry about in Freshers Week (and the few things you do).
Don’t Worry About…
Making a BFF Immediately
Every fresher feels this fear – that you’re never going to make any new friends, ever.
Freshers Week is basically non-stop socials. It’s almost impossible
not to meet people. Plus, because everyone is new and everyone is nervous, everyone wants to talk to everyone!
Don’t think the first person you talk to has to be your bezzie for life. It may turn out you’ve got nothing in common. Even once Freshers Week is over, there’s going to be loads of new people to meet in your seminars and at the societies you join.
Putting a Career Plan Into Action
Yes, uni is meant to prepare you for the real world, and yes, at some point you’ll want to start going to career fairs and looking into internships. But consider Freshers a free pass – you’re going to have so much going on with settling into your accommodation, meeting new people and starting your course that trying to throw in job stuff as well is guaranteed to overwhelm you.
Besides, uni is all about figuring out who you are and what you want. Don’t sweat about having it down from day one!
Completing Your Entire Reading List Before Seminars Start
It’s good to be prepared but not
that prepared. You’ll have plenty of time to do your reading before classes each week. Also, you can usually buy your course books second-hand from old students, so you’ll save money by holding off!
Use the run-up to uni to focus on more important things – like getting mum to teach you how washing machines actually work.
Having the Best Week of Your Entire life, Ever.
Uni folklore says Freshers Week should be the coolest, craziest time of your life. But remember that you’re also going to be trying to adapt to something completely new, that you may get homesick and that you
will get Freshers Flu and feel rubbish.
It’s okay if at some point you call your mum in tears, or if you need some time out alone in your room for a little while. It doesn’t mean uni won’t be the best three years of your life. It just means that nothing is ever 100% perfect!
DO WORRY ABOUT …
Spending Your Student Loan All at Once
Seeing all that money in your bank account the day your loan comes through is awesome. But it’s easy to spend it too quickly if you’re not keeping track – and having to live off super noodles for the remainder of the term is
Put together a spreadsheet listing all the big payments you have to make (rent, bills, weekly food shop etc). Work out a rough weekly budget and stick to it!
Attending the Freshers Fair
Go - they have free cake.
Also, this is where you get all the info you need about life at uni. You can check out the societies and figure out which ones you want to join, and you’ll also be able to buy all those kitchen utensils you forgot to pack. There’s other cool stuff as well – like discount cards and vouchers for local shops & restaurants.
And, again: FREE CAKE.
Crafting the Best Fancy Dress Costume of All Time
Trust us, this is important.
Only as a Fresher can you justify spending an entire day sellotaping together stupid amounts of tinfoil, cardboard boxes and glitter. Take advantage of it! Your Instagram account depends on it…
