As a student, managing your money can be difficult. But, by following the simple tips for saving (and making) money we've rounded up for you below, you can help keep your spending under control and have more money in your bank for the fun things you want to do...

Buy Second Hand Books

Course textbooks are pretty expensive but buying every single one brand new is not a necessity. There are many second hand books for sale online. All it takes is a little bit of research once you've got your reading list. Books for most courses (except perhaps Law or medicine) don't really change that much over time, so it might not be so important that you get the latest edition if it's really expensive (if in doubt, speak to your tutors).

You should also check your uni library and the local town library before you buy any books as they may be available to borrow.

If you have to buy new, consider going halves with a course-mate (just remember to share time with it equally if you do). And don't forget to sell it once you've finished with it to recoup some of your money.

Hunt for Student Discounts!

We all love saving money and when we have an opportunity to shop and save at the same time, then why not make use of it in the best possible way. With a plethora of brands and retailers holding student discounts, you’re bound to make savings and find something to get you through a few years of an impoverished life.

Be it clothing stores, food stores or stationery shops; there wll be some discounts available for sure. Another top tip is to inquire with staff in-store because deals are not always advertised.

Go for Home Cooked Food

Eating is what we all love to do but ordering takeaways every next day not only ruins your pockets but your health too. Cut down the cost of your meals by cooking meals from scratch yourself. It will be beneficial for both your budget and wellbeing.

And avoid the need to stop and buy expensive sandwiches while at uni by packing a lunchbox with healthy, cheaper food to take with you to university.

Go Public with Your Transport

Cutting back on your transport is one of the surefire ways for maximizing your savings. Leave the idea of buying your own car behind and go for public transport. Considering the ongoing costs like fuel, maintenance, parking and insurance, using public transport is way cheaper. Apart from public transport, cycling and walking are cheaper and healthier options.

Utilize Your Talents

You must have heard a saying that “when you’re good at something, never do it for free”. So, use your skills and put your talent to work. Start making money by doing the things you’re good at.

If you are great at playing the piano or guitar, offer lessons to other students or people in the local area. Love writing? Work as a freelancer writer. Budding photographer? Sell your snaps. If you are more entrepreneurial you could set up your own online business buying and selling goods.
