Sheffield’s late night scene is ideally set up for students, in terms of style, variety, and budget. Eating out is affordable, with the average cost of a meal around £15 per person, and the average pint of beer costing only £4.
The city has plenty of events organised especially for students, with weekly dance floor nights, pub quiz evenings, theme parties and much more. Our top tip is to look for events advertised in your students’ union bar. They’re sure to be full of students, and usually have inexpensive cover charges (if any), and drinks deals once inside.
There are loads of pubs and bars to explore in Sheffield. One of our favourites is called Bungalows and Bears. It’s a pub in an old fire station serving ales, cocktails, brunches and burgers. Whatever your like to eat or drink, you’ll find something here and with a name like Bungalows and Bears it’s easy to remember!
For late night dancing, be sure to check out The Leadmill. It’s Sheffield’s longest-running nightclub and music venue and has been open since 1980, so they’re clearly doing something right! It’s a must-visit spot for any live music aficionado, and a piece of classic Sheffield history.

Rental costs drop noticeably once you look outside the city centre, so shop around and see if anything suits you.
The fastest way to get around in Sheffield is probably by bus or tram. There is a wide network of public transport which will take you all over the city for £2.70 for a one-way ticket. Keep an eye out for First and Stagecoach buses, since they offer student single bus ticket which only costs £1.80.

So what’ll it cost? Fair question, and one which we’ll elaborate on. Firstly, fees. At undergraduate level, these will almost certainly be capped at £9,790 per year and there’s no getting around it. A tuition fee loan is the simplest way to cover this cost, and you won’t need to pay it back until after you graduate.
Groceries are another monthly expense worth considering. With 580,000 residents, Sheffield has all the regular supermarket outlets such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons. As a self-catered student, you can expect to budget around £146 per month for groceries, and our best advice is to get a loyalty card to your favourite local supermarket, so that you can reap the rewards of all the points you’ll accumulate throughout the year.
