Sheffield is a marvellous city in Yorkshire, packed with exciting activities and opportunities for students who fancy going to uni up north but aren’t keen on studying in the massive metropolitan cities like Manchester and Liverpool. If this sounds interesting to you, but you need a bit more convincing, then you’re in luck – we’ve got ten great reasons to study in Sheffield right here...

1. The universities

Students considering Sheffield will have a tough choice on their hands, because the city has a pair of great unis – the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Both offer up plenty of subjects, courses, facilities and more, so take a good look at our uni profiles to see which one suits you best.

2. Affordability

Compared to other popular cities across the UK, Sheffield is an enjoyably affordable place to live. If you’re trying to get a great education while saving some shiny coins (and with the cost of living increasing these days, who isn’t?!), Sheffield’s the spot to do it.

3. Green spaces in the city

Sheffield has a wealth of parks and green spaces for you to take advantage of during your downtime. We know it can be hard to pull you away from the books, but with places like Graves Park, the Botanical Gardens and even a community farm where you can take a walk with an alpaca, we’re sure you can find a few afternoons spare.

4. Green spaces further afield

Situated in Yorkshire, Sheffield is lucky enough to be surrounded by picturesque views and rolling hills. The Peak District is only a short drive away, and it’s great for a weekend getaway.

5. The nightlife

As a city with a large student population, you can expect to have some brilliant nights out at Sheffield’s clubs and bars. If you’re keen on live music, you’ll also have a lot of choice when it comes to gigs. Top bands frequently play at the city’s venues, and it’s a great place to spot some upcoming bands too.

6. Sports

There are plenty of things to check out for sports fans in Sheffield, from the football clubs to the World Snooker Championships held at the Crucible Theatre every year. You’ll also be able to get involved in various sports societies organised by your uni, if you fancy playing a sport rather than watching it.

7. Community

Despite being a bustling city with lots of people, Sheffield manages to maintain a sense of community and friendliness. You’ll never be short of people to chat to while waiting for a bus, and more often than not they'll be up for a natter.

8. The shopping

Alongside the classic selection of shops that you’re sure to find in cities across the UK, Sheffield also has some great independent outlets where you can pick up great food, coffee and snazzy treats if you’ve got some cash going spare (we did mention Sheffield’s affordability, right?).

9. LGBTQ+ friendly

Sheffield is a LGBTQ+ friendly city, with lots of welcoming pubs, bars, cafés, events and more for members of the LGBTQ+ community to enjoy. It even has its own LGBTQ+ arts organisation, Andro and Eve.

10. Henderson’s Relish

There are very few cities in the UK that can claim to have their own sauce, but Sheffield is one of the lucky ones. Henderson’s Relish is a spicy, subtly tangy sauce that goes well on chips, cheese on toast, burgers... Actually, it goes well on most things.

Has that convinced you that Sheffield should be on your list? Surely it was the Henderson's Relish that sealed the deal. Well, next thing to do is to take a look at our Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield profiles to see which one you prefer...
