Considering heading to the south coast for uni and got your eye on Portsmouth, but need a little convincing? There are a whole load of reasons why students could enjoy their time studying in this coastal city, and we’ve collected a bunch of them in this very article. Whether you’re looking for some hustle and bustle in a vibrant city, or trying to find a community to support you through your studies, Portsmouth has you covered and then some. Read on to see more reasons why you should study in Portsmouth...

1. The university

The University of Portsmouth offers students the chance to study a wide variety of courses on a particularly swish campus, supported by a great faculty and useful facilities. It also has an excellent reputation for helping students with their future career prospects, which is always worth considering when looking at unis.

2. The sea

The majority of Portsmouth is spread across Portsea Island, off the south coast of England. The result is you’ll be surrounded by sea on all sides (well, one side is more like a creek, but it still counts). If you’re a fan of the ocean, there aren’t many places like this in the UK!

3. A day out for daredevils

Portsmouth might not be the first place you think of for adrenalin-pumping activities, but you’ll be able to find some exciting stuff in the city, like paddleboarding and kayaking in the sea, and even abseiling down Spinnaker Tower!

4. Birthplace of Charles Dickens

Want to find out more about the legendary author behind Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations? It’s worth checking out the Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum to see how his life began in Portsmouth.

5. Football

Portsmouth is home to Portsmouth F.C. and its football stadium Fratton Park is a great place to spend a weekend afternoon catching a game. Fingers crossed they have another great season, like the one in 2008...

6. Societies

The university’s students have organised a massive range of societies for people to join, so no matter what you’re interested in, you’re likely to find other people to share that passion with.

7. Gig life

There are plenty of good music venues in Portsmouth for anyone looking to see a gig in the evening. You can expect to find acts playing at the Portsmouth Guildhall, Wedgewood Rooms, the Dockyard Club and more most nights of the week.

8. Transport links

Portsmouth is well-connected by rail to most of the south of England, and strong connections to London make accessing the rest of the country easy too. You can also catch a ferry to the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth if you fancy a day or two away.

9. Top places to eat

It’s always nice to know you’re heading somewhere with good food, and Portsmouth has some fab restaurants, like Croxton’s, Cosy Club, and Pie and Vinyl (which sells both pie and vinyl, funnily enough).

10. Welcoming community

Portsmouth isn’t very big compared to other cities, and as mentioned earlier, it’s mostly on an island. As such, you can feel the sense of community there – the people are friendly and welcoming, and you should have no trouble settling into the student population.
