So, you love animals? Enough to pursue a career in caring for and treating them? Veterinary medicine just might be the course for you. Veterinary medicine is concerned with improving the lives of all kinds of animals through the treatment of disease, disorders and injury. Needless to say, it can be both a challenging and massively fulfilling career path.
It typically takes five years to become fully qualified, and in this time you’ll learn about the anatomy and biology of animals, followed by the diagnosis, treatment and control of diseases that affect them. You’ll learn about animal husbandry and build clinical skills which enable you to work in practice on placements or field trips which can often involve overseas study.
Much like in general medicine, professional veterinarians have many options to specialise their work in key fields such as animal behaviour, dentistry, toxicology, surgery and much more. There are also many vets who focus on a particular species such as equine, dairy, canine or feline practice.
We’ve put together the following guide to show you the top unis with veterinary medicine courses in each UK area. We’ve used subject league tables from Complete University Guide, where you can also read more about the course and unis which offer it.
