University open days are a great way of checking out where you might be spending the next three years of your life. And they are a great way to figure out if the university is the best fit for you.
Getting the chance to speak to staff and current students and ask them any questions you might have is one of the best reasons you should go on an open day visit - and we have a
you should be asking to help you make your decision. list of questions
But be warned... there are some questions you should definitely NOT ask at an open day. Here they are...
Are Lectures Compulsory?
Just because you won’t have to shout out your name during the register or have teachers notice your absence because there’s now over 100 students in their class rather than 30, doesn’t mean that you should try and get away with not attending in the first place... and then ask if that’s ok.
And while it’s likely that you’ll miss the odd lecture due to getting rooms mixed up, illness or the fact your alarm clock didn’t go off at 1pm to wake you up, you probably shouldn’t highlight the fact you’re aware you’ll do this before you’ve even been offered a place.
Do Your Library Computers Have Netflix Blocked?
Even with all the best will in the world, you can’t spend hours at a computer writing essays without some kind of Facebook/Twitter/Netflix/Funny cat video break. And your university will know that. They won’t encourage it, but they aren’t going to stop you from procrastinating occasionally either.
What they definitely won’t want to know is that you’re catching up on the newest episode of the latest Netflix own series or watching some classic Breaking Bad rather than getting through your essential reading lit.
What’s The Eye Candy Like Around Here?
Of course it’s always nice to know you’ll have something nice to look at when the deadlines hit or lectures hit a dull moment, but take a look around yourself rather than getting tips from your future tutors or current students who are there to represent them. They’ll just think you’re a bit weird for asking, then there will be an awkward silence and there won’t be a hole in the ground to swallow you up.
Will Studying Here Be Better Than This?
Open days give you lots of information so you’ll be engaged, interested and hopefully be passionate about studying there by the end of the day.
But occasionally you may
and realise the course/uni isn’t for you after all. Maybe the lecturers don’t seem engaged, the students don’t seem that nice or maybe the modules just aren’t what you thought. Whatever reason you decide to say no to that university, don’t ask whether you’re correct in thinking it’s not right for you. Ignorance is bliss for them on this occasion. go to an open day
How Flexible Are Your Deadlines?
Of course there may be circumstances during your time at university that mean you can’t hit an essay deadline. Universities are likely to be very supportive, offer you extensions and generally try and help you in any way they can. This is a given.
By asking this question on an open day you’ll just come across as either very disorganised or someone who expects to hand in essays late on a regular basis. Neither is good.
What Time Does The SU Bar Open?
Ok, obviously not every moment of your university life will be spent in the library or at home, and a
will become an important aspect of your time there. But you’ll find out about SU Bar openings and the best nightclubs during fresher’s week, so maybe save those sorts of questions for then. social life
Ask this question at an open day while they’re talking about important modules and you may come across as someone who’s planning on spending their student loan on partying rather than partaking in study.
Is That Seriously My Accommodation?
During open days you’ll often be given a chance to look around the location and into the
the university will be providing you with. student accommodation
Warning: It will be nice, but probably nothing like your current home. Try to avoid looking devastated at the prospect of doing your own laundry, eye rolling at the single bed or asking for a better view out your window.
Can My Friends Join Me in Lectures When They Come to Visit?
Of course you’ll be allowed visitors while you’re at university, but maybe don’t ask if the lecturer wouldn’t mind being the entertainment for a few hours. They’re there to teach the people who paid for the classes, not the best friend’s cousin who wanted to see what university was like and who managed to get sneaked into a lecture.
What’s The Designated Hashtag For My Uni Selfies?
Seriously, why would you even ask this question? Just no.
