Clubs and societies are a big part of the social side of university life and there are many benefits of joining one:  getting fit, learning something new, indulging a passion, having fun, and meeting new friends.

They also give you lots of ‘soft skills’, like communication and teamwork skills, that employers look for, to add to your CV - so we really advise you join one during your time at uni.

In fact, such is their importance in a student’s life, we dedicate a whole Whatuni Student Choice Awards category to them.

And in this year’s awards, for an incredible 4th time (and 3rd time in a row) students have crowned Bangor University as the best in the UK for Clubs & Societies.

It’s really not hard to see why they keep bagging this award - after all, they currently offer over 175 different clubs and societies for students to take part in across a wide variety of interests, all managed by the Bangor Students' Union.

Sports Clubs at Bangor

If you want to try new sports – to get fit and meet new people – there are currently 63 sports clubs to try out:

Included are more popular and well-known sports like Football, Rugby, Rowing, Netball, and Basketball to name a few.

However, there’s also some more adventurous options, such as Mountain Walking, Sub Aqua (scuba diving) and Wakeboarding. And there's some slightly more unusual sports you might not have heard of before, such as Pole Fit, Quidditch (for any Harry Potter Fans) and Octopush (underwater hockey).

Feeling competitive? Well, Bangor has 39 sports teams entered in to British Universities & Colleges Sport leagues 2018/19 – giving you the chance to compete on a national level against other universities in your chosen sport.

They also have an annual Varsity event where Bangor Students can go up against rivals from Aberystwyth Uni. #GreenandGoldArmy

Societies at Bangor

For those who want to pick up a new hobby or take part in something a bit more academic, Bangor currently offer 113 societies:

Get ‘Pitch Perfect’ and join the Acapella society, or become a ‘master’ in the Chess club…

Find some four-legged friends in the dog-walking society or get green-fingered in the Horticultural Organic Garden society…

Or expand your cultural horizons in the Korean, Bulgarian, German, Hong Kong, Indian, Indonesian, Irish or Japanese societies.

We spoke to Louise Fell, VP for Sports at Bangor Uni’s Students Union, who reiterated the importance of clubs in enhancing the student experience and boosting student welfare:

“I believe that clubs and societies are incredibly important to students on so many levels. Firstly, it provides a way for students to connect socially, as soon as they arrive at university - with a group of like-minded individuals who have a shared interest.

Being a member of a club or society will allow you to try all sorts of new things and really make the most out of the university experience. It also allows you to gain skills such as leadership and teamwork, which are invaluable when going on to gain graduate employment."

So how are Bangor ensuring that every student has access to this important aspect of university life?

“There is no membership charge, and I cannot stress how important that is to have a truly accessible clubs & societies offering. Students can join as many, or as few, clubs and societies as they like - and if there isn't one that suits their needs, then setting one up is just as easy as joining an existing club or society - and still totally free!”

That’s right… every single of those 175 clubs and societies is free to join. This is great for students who want to broaden their horizons without making a huge dent in their student loan.

No wonder students have been raving about how great Bangor’s clubs and societies are…

Students loved the fact that creating a society of your own is really easy to do and that the Students’ Union will support you:

Students also told us how welcoming and friendly societies are to join:

If you are heading off to study at Bangor in September, then joining a club or society when you get there couldn’t be simpler. Just head on down to the Serendipity fair during their Welcome Week and give some a try.

Bangor continue to excel themselves in their extra-curricular activities and were well-deserved winners at our annual awards ceremony. This award really means a lot to Bangor, as Louise tells us:

“It's absolutely incredible to be recognised for the work that we do here in Bangor on a national stage. It really makes it all worth it. This year we've further expanded our large clubs and societies offering, we now have 61 student led clubs and over 120 societies - and we would be nowhere without the fabulous work those student leaders put in.”

And while they only walked away with the Clubs & Societies award on the night, they were nominated in a total of 8 categories (including Uni of the Year), coming 3rd in the Accommodation and International categories.

Students are clearly loving their time at Bangor University. Will you enjoy your time there too? Find out if Bangor is the right university for you by checking them out at an Open Day.
