How Are These Rankings Created?
To be on this list, universities are assessed on tons of different things (13 to be exact), including research, teaching quality, international work and knowledge transfer.
In order to get this information in the first place, surveys are sent out to over 10,000 senior academics. Academics can only take part if they’ve been specifically invited, making this survey the world’s largest invite-only opinion survey. If you name isn’t down, your opinion ain’t coming in basically.
How Did the UK Do?
In the 800 long list of the best institutions in the world, 78 UK universities made the list (the US narrowly beat the UK with 147). 34 UK universities were placed in the top 200, and three are in the top 10!
Imperial College London in particular had reason to celebrate their ranking, as they moved up one place from last year. And Oxford will also be getting out their celebratory hats, after beating US based University Harvard and getting second place in the list.
Other UK universities to rank included
King’s College, Durham, Bristol, Manchester, London School of Economics (LSE) and Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is equally chuffed with their placement, and a spokesperson from the
University of Edinburgh said: "It is always pleasing to see the University perform strongly in international league tables, reinforcing our ranking as one of the leading global universities.
"Our strong position is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of the entire University community. Our significant investments in early career researchers with international leadership potential, and the flexibility of a four year degree with direct engagement with research and practice, allow us to deliver excellence in both education and research."
UK universities not only ranked well, but the majority actually did better than they did last year. Universities that increased their position significantly in the list include University College London (14
th up from 22 nd), Kings College (23 rd up from 34 th) and Exeter jumped an incredible 93, up from 155 th!
What Part of the UK Was Ranked Best?
In terms of UK location, London performed the best, with 7 universities in the top 200. Four of which had improved on their rankings from last year and entered the top 30.Who was classed as the best in London? That title goes to Imperial College.
The editor of The Times rankings, Phil Baty, confirmed the UK’s success, and said “The UK is a stand-out performer in this year’s rankings”. And
Universities Minister Jo Johnson added that, “These rankings confirm the world-class standing of our higher education”. Go UK!
