The Whatuni Student Bursaries programme was set up in 2021 to give financial support to deserving students, and to recognise institutions which were felt to have really gone above and beyond to support their students during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The bursaries were given to the winners of the Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs), who had to enter via a submissions process which was voted on by a specially-chosen group of student judges.

Each of the four winning institutions was given £10,000 to be awarded to five of their deserving students (each of whom was awarded a £2,000 Whatuni bursary), with last year’s programme helping a total of 20 students.

The bursaries have already had a real impact on lives of the student recipients, who were selected by their institutions through an application process.

Sharine’s story

“The Whatuni bursary has been life-changing,” said Sharine, a 2nd year Criminology student at UCEN Manchester.

“My son has a disability and I work as well, and I thought if I apply for this bursary, I’ll be able to reduce my shifts. The bursary has had a massive impact on my life. I bought a new laptop, and that’s going to help with my studies, which means in the long term I can help my family and get the degree that I want.”

Andrea, studying at Norland, said: “This bursary just came at the right time to be able to help me. I wanted to cry, I didn’t really believe it, but I was very happy. The bursary will be used to support my studies and pay my fees.”
