If you’re concerned about the environment, and you want to be sure that the university you choose has an eco-conscience, have a look at how they rank in People & Planet’s Green League of universities for 2012.
People and Planet are a national student organisation dedicated to protecting the environment and human rights, and campaigning to end world poverty. They’re pretty nice guys, and most Student Unions have a People & Planet society, so you’re likely to come across their good work some time soon, if you haven’t already.
They’ve had the brilliant idea of awarding universities degree classifications, so you can see which are the girly swots of the green university world, and which are the library-shy slobs who need to pull their dungarees up and get with the planet-saving programme.
The University of Greenwich came out on top, ending up with a first class rating and a great write-up from People and Planet, who said that Greenwich had “one of the most comprehensive and ambitious environmental policies” they’d seen. Greenwich have reduced their carbon emissions by 20% since 2005, and designed special recycling bins to decrease waste as much as possible.
Also in the top five were the
University of Plymouth, the University of Brighton, the University of Gloucestershire and Nottingham Trent University.
Universities were rated on factors including Environmental Policy, Ethical Investment, use of Fairtrade and Ethical products, and work on Carbon Emissions, and ranked according to their scores across the categories.
We’ve reproduced the top ranked universities below, but you can view the full results on the
People & Planet website.
If you’re trying to choose a university, and environmentally friendly living is important to you, then you’d be a fool not to check the full People and Planet listings. If you’re a current student, check how your university’s doing and if they’re lagging behind, start bugging them to make a difference.
