It’s not the outcome you want, but it’s definitely not the end of the world. Applying through Clearing when you don’t get the grades you hoped for can feel disappointing or conjure up feelings of failure. However, with over tens of thousands of students using Clearing every year, the service is proving itself vital for students looking for that perfect uni.
So rather than dwell on the grades you didn’t get, focus on what’s still achievable: a place on a course, at a uni you’re excited about and could thrive in.
Ahead of results day, it helps to remember these top tips in the event you need to apply to uni through Clearing.
We've got loads of handy Clearing articles and more on our Clearing Hub. Browse unis across the UK, find courses with open Clearing spaces, and get advice on your next steps in Clearing.

The last thing you want to do is frantically search for phone numbers on results day. Make a note of all the hotline numbers for different universities you may need to contact in case you end up going through Clearing. This gives you more time to think about prioritising which universities you’ll call first, questions you need to ask them and any alternative courses you may want to enquire about.
You may have had your heart set on a specific course, but it’s important to remember there are other courses that can meet those expectations. Some students change their mind when it comes to what and where they want to study as they approach results day, and use Clearing as an opportunity to find a place that reflects their newfound preference. In 2020, over 28,000 students who got an offer released themselves into Clearing. So while it’s perfectly normal to be disappointed, don’t let this cloud an opportunity to find a solid alternative that supports your long-term goals.
If you struggle in high-stress situations, it may not be comforting to hear advice like ‘relax’ or ‘don’t worry.’ It’s easier said than done when you’re in that situation. However, taking care of yourself will help you navigate Clearing in a logical way on results day. Talking about your concerns with friends, family and teachers can give you that reassurance and support you need. Don’t neglect activities and routines that support your wellbeing, whether that’s staying active or getting enough rest.
As well as having hotline numbers to hand, make sure you keep your UCAS ID, Clearing number, grades and personal statement near you when you start making your calls. If a line is busy, move on to the next and come back to them later. Don’t be afraid to ask for names, emails and direct phone numbers if you need to follow up after a call. A lot of people help out during the Clearing period so it’s always good to know who you had your prior conversations with.
Your grades don’t define who you are. Speaking with confidence and showing enthusiasm for a certain subject area or course will shine through on the phone. If you still have some nerves, keep your personal statement nearby to refer to. You essentially have to sell yourself, so think about what you love about that course the most and why you chose that uni in the first place. If you’re asked about your results, it doesn’t have to be awkward. Be honest about why you think you ended up with the grades you got.
Just because you’re going through Clearing doesn’t mean your needs and preferences don’t matter. If an alternative course really doesn’t support your interests, you shouldn’t feel obligated or pressured to accept a place. Remember, you’ll be studying this course for the next few years, so think about what’s best for you.
