Get ready: three steps to choosing a history Clearing course

Doing a bit of research in advance and preparing yourself if you think your A-level results are likely to be a horrible mess is a great idea. Hopefully your results will be fine and you'll be able to chuck your preparation in the bin, but there's no harm in being prepared!

1. Create a shortlist

Before results day, have another look at all the universities you’d considered going to, and double check their entry requirements for history courses. If they’re asking for grades one or two before the ones you were predicted, make a note to check them for history Clearing courses on results day. If you’ve already got a rough shortlist of courses you’d like to study, you’ll save valuable time researching possible universities on the day.

2. Check the courses match your interests

Check that the syllabus suits your needs: if you were hoping to specialise in 20^th Century history, or were hoping to write your dissertation on Medieval Midwifery, you need to be sure that the department you choose will have the resources to support you.

3. Prepare to call

Get prepared. Make sure you know how the Clearing process works, and get all your information gathered in one place. If you’re super-organised, you could book in to speak to your school or college careers advisor, who should have a good idea of which universities are likely to have Clearing places for history.
