As well as leading to a rewarding and stable career path with lots of options for progression and specialisation, nursing students are supported throughout their studies by the NHS bursaries, making nursing a popular option for students who want to enter the healthcare profession. It also benefits from being a bit less competitive than medicine courses but can lead to similar career paths.
This makes it the ideal choice for students in Clearing who want to enter the healthcare profession after university. You'll find spaces in Clearing for degrees in nursing here, so if you’ve not yet secured your place at university, that's where you'll want to look.
How do you apply for nursing courses through Clearing?
You’ll know if you’re in Clearing if you see the card reading ‘find a course in Clearing’ on your UCAS Hub. If you aren’t already in Clearing but want to apply for a course in Clearing, you can release yourself from your confirmed place and add a course in Clearing instead.
To apply for courses in Clearing you’ll want to speak to the university you’re interested in first, either over the phone or by filling out an application online. Once you’ve been made an informal offer you can add the option in your UCAS Hub if you want to accept it and the university should then confirm your place provided you’ve met the terms of the informal offer.
Our full guide on UCAS Clearing will walk you through the process in more detail. For some courses in Clearing you might be asked to do an interview before an offer is made. Nursing is one of the courses more likely to want to interview you, so make sure you’re prepared to hop on a video call at quite short notice for your interview.

What are the next steps after you get an offer for nursing?
So, congratulations! You’ve been made an informal offer, added it to your UCAS Hub, the uni has confirmed your place and you’re off in September to study nursing. Unfortunately, the work doesn’t stop here.
Now you have a confirmed place, you’ll want to start thinking about accommodation. Some universities will still have places in their halls of residence for students who’ve joined through Clearing, and if so, you’re in luck. Apply for the university accommodation and wait to get your room assignment back. Some universities will have already filled all their rooms, however. In this case you’ll want to look at private accommodation providers. As well as private house shares to join, there might be the option of taking up a room in a privately owned hall of residence.
Whichever approach you decide to take, the university’s accommodation team will be able to offer support and advice. Most accommodation teams will be able to give you contact details for recommended accommodation providers in the city and the university might also offer services like contract checking for peace of mind before you sign on. Once your accommodation is all sorted, it’s time to get packing and planning your move.
Clearing is a stressful time, particularly if you’re applying for popular courses like nursing. While the application process isn’t going to be the most fun and it’s probably not how you envisioned spending your time after A-level results day, there are still plenty of spaces available on nursing courses, so don’t give up hope too soon. If you’ve read through our guides and watched our video on top tips, you’ll be in a strong position to get applying and soon you won’t even remember the stress of Clearing once you’re at uni making friends with all your new flatmates and course mates.
