We asked Fusion Students to share their top advice for students in Clearing who are looking to find their home away from home at the last minute.
Updated: 12 Jun 2026
Going through Clearing can be stressful, particularly if you also need to arrange accommodation. Availability and guarantees vary between universities, so you may have fewer room choices than students who applied earlier.
Ask the university what accommodation is still available and how to apply as soon as you receive an offer.
We've got loads of handy Clearing articles and more on our Clearing Hub. Browse unis across the UK, find courses with open Clearing spaces, and get advice on your next steps in Clearing.
Make sure the course and university are right for you but also check your accommodation options before accepting a place. Find out what is available, what it costs and whether you would be happy with any alternatives.
For example, a big city offers a bigger variety of types of accommodation, but a small town can potentially save you some serious cash.
Don’t panic if you don’t think you’ve been offered the best accommodation; equally, don’t rush or feel pressured into accepting unreasonably priced accommodation just because you think you might have ‘missed the boat’. You have more options than you may think.
Many universities put on open days specifically for Clearing students like you, so you can explore accommodation options and see what’s available, as well as get to know students who are in the same position as you, and to help you get a feel for the area you’ll be living in.
Your university, students’ union or accommodation provider may run official online groups where you can meet potential housemates and ask current students for advice. Be cautious about unverified accommodation adverts or requests for money, as rental fraud can target students and other young renters.
Looking for somewhere to live can be stressful, but don’t be left without somewhere to go come freshers’ week! Stay on top of it all to minimise the stress; go to that house-viewing, call the accommodation provider for the second, third, and fourth time today – you’ll thank yourself for it.
