Daria's story
Hi, my name is Daria and I’m a second year biomedical science student at St George’s, University of London.
I chose to go through Clearing because I did not get the grades that I needed in order to get into medicine, which is what I initially wanted to do. I did have a back up choice at King’s College University for biomedical sciences, however St George’s do offer a program where you are able to transfer into medicine after your third year of your biomedical science degree. Due to this, I decided to call St George’s on results day and go through Clearing to see if I was able to get a place.
One of the highlights of my experience as a student going through Clearing was the ability of getting a place and the satisfaction that came with that. Another highlight that definitely surprised me was how easy the Clearing process was compared to what I thought it was going to look like. Once I got through to the Clearing team at St George’s University, I got asked a couple of questions after which they told me that they had the space available for me for the biomedical science degree.
One of the challenges that I faced while going through the process of Clearing were definitely the negative thoughts that I had while waiting to get through to the Clearing team at St George’s. It’s very hard knowing that you didn’t get the grades that you necessarily wanted or needed and feeling like you could’ve done something better. However, I found that I overcame these by having very supportive friends and also teachers. I was surrounded by people that were going through the same exact process as I was so I just reminded myself that I’m not alone in this.
If you considered going through Clearing because you changed your mind about the university, the course or because you got lower grades I’d advise you to just go for it. I think a lot of people see Clearing as a very daunting process especially if you got lower grades than expected but you just have to remind yourself that you’re not alone in the process. You’re going to be surrounded by so many people that will go through the same exact thing that you’re going through. You just have to stay positive, remain calm, clear your head and just go for it. And don’t hesitate to ask for help. Just remember that you’ll find a great place at a great university and once you’re there you’ll have an amazing time.
