If results day rolls round and you don’t quite make the grades you need for your top two maths choices, there’s no need to start panicking. It’s important to remember that you still have plenty of options, and with a little bit of research and some persistence you should be able to find yourself a good alternative in no time.

First up, why not look into the possibility of doing an HND or an HNC course instead of a degree? An HND (Higher National Diploma) is a work-related course that takes two years to complete (or three to four years part time), while a HNC (Higher National Certificate) takes one year to complete (or over two years part time). Many universities and colleges offer these alternatives to a regular degree, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you don’t get in to your top two universities. One of the main advantages of studying for an HND or HNC is that they can be topped up with further study at a later date, so you should still be able to work towards a full undergraduate degree if you choose to do so.

The main thing to remember is not to rush into something if you’re not completely sure; while it’s good to be prepared for Clearing 2024 and to act quickly on results day if you fall slightly short (as Clearing is first come, first served), it’s equally important to be sure about the course you end up choosing. You can always consider having a year out to travel and/or retake your exams if you don’t think you’ve found the right maths course for you.
