The road to university can feel a bit like the Yellow Brick Road in terms of stepping into the unknown, and there’s a whole host of factors to consider. From
choosing the right subject and thinking about whether to stay on home turf or fly the nest, to deciding when is the right time.
All of this decision making can make that journey to university feel a little bit up in the air, like the farmhouse in the cyclone. You may have experienced other concerns too, like "Do I really have what it takes?!!"
But there is no need to fear. Remember you’re not alone, there are plenty of other people in the same situation trying to figure it all out.
Let us focus on this a moment with reference to, yes you guessed it, a selected few of the Wizard of Oz characters!
The Scarecrow - If I Only Had a Brain!
Perhaps you've questioned if you’ll understand everything, or get the right grades in the first place?
We all have moments when we question our abilities and wonder if we’re good enough. But don’t underestimate your potential! You'll only make yourself your own worst enemy and you don't want that!
Always remember you’re capable of achieving whatever you put your mind to, and even when you think you may have learnt it all, there is always something new to discover. Never stop learning!
The Lion - Talk Me Out of It!
Feeling like you don't have the courage to go to university?
It’s all part of human nature to feel this way, but don't let it prevent you from chasing your dreams! If you know that university is something you definitely want to accomplish, become the master of bravery and with the right attitude you might even surprise yourself with what you’re capable of!
The Tin Man - My Heart is Not Quite in It
Do you feel like your heart is not fully invested in the idea of going to university? If so, there is no need to put yourself down or go against what your heart tells you.
Or you go to university but then decide you want to change course,
moving to another university or defer until the time is right for you, there is no need to feel bad about this either. Put the kettle on, talk it over with friends, family and university staff, and all will soon be resolved. Always remember a problem shared is a problem halved!
Now click your ruby slippers and tell yourself there’s no place like home….or the right university for you.
