Ok, let’s start with....

what is uni

What is Open University?

Sounds like it’s a university where all the lectures are outside, but thankfully this isn’t the case, (yes that sounds cool, but would you really want to make notes in the rain?).

Open University is a distance learning provider, so you can study wherever you want, whenever you want and often at your own pace. In fact some of their courses don’t even require you to have any qualifications to take part.

What is Monster’s University?

How have you not seen this film? Seriously it’s amazing. Monster’s University is a pretty darn good animated feature that explains how Mike and Sully met before they started their scaring careers at the Inc. Go watch it. Like now. Right now. We won’t be offended.

What is university like?

Every university is different, which means everyone’s university experience is different, so there’s no one answer to this question really. Yes, it sounds like a cop out, it’s not.

If you want to know what a particular university is like, the best way to find out is to go all Sherlock and play detective. Order their prospectuses, go on open days, find out their stats and find out what other students thought of it. That should give you a pretty good idea of what that university’s life is like.

Told you our answer wasn’t a cop out.

What is university Clearing?

University Clearing is the process you’ll go through if you didn’t get the right A-level grades on that dreaded results day. If you get lower grades than you need on the big day, don’t worry, your uni choice may still accept you anyway if they have space.

If you end up going through clearing the most important thing is not to panic. On the day, and for several days after that, there will be tons of support available to you from both us and your university choices.

Will university fees go down?

As much as we’d love to bring you the news that fees are going down, it seems unlikely at the moment.

However, you won’t have to save your pennies or drop unsubtle hints to your parents in order to attend university just yet. The financial support still exists which means you can apply for loans and bursaries to help pay for lectures, housing, books, food and fancy dress essentials for nights out.

Will university accept BTECs?

Almost all UK universities are now acknowledging and accepting BTECs along with A-levels on uni applications.

But just like A-levels (and in fact any other type of qualification) different universities will ask for different things. Some may want you to have just one BTEC (the same as 3 A-levels), while others will want you to be studying an A-level alongside your BTEC.

The best advice we can give is to do is to double check with your individual choices before applying, oh and read our BTEC guide.

Will university change me?

It may, it may not. You’ll see, read and hear new things every day for three years and make new friends who may or may not change your perceptions of things and yourself as a person. It’s all very different, but in a good way.

Ultimately it’ll be down to you whether you stay the same, grow as a person or become a complete tool. Although obviously try not to be the latter.

Is university worth it?

If you go to the right uni with the right course for you, then yes it’s absolutely worth it. You’ll learn more about a subject you love, learn even more outside the lecture hall, meet new people along the way and maybe even find a new hobby!

Is university hard?

We could lie on this answer and say 'no, it’s really easy' and 'you can turn up to no lectures and still be top of the class', but then you’d just end up failing uni and blaming us, which would be really awkward.

We won’t sugar-coat this: university is hard. It’s meant to be. After all, it’s essentially more school. You’ll have exams, essays, extra reading, and revision, just like you do now. Except this time you’ll also have uni societies, a few hours off here and there and most importantly, freshers week.

Is university full-time education?

It can be. But if you can’t attend university full time, it doesn’t mean that a uni’s doors are closed to you. In fact it’s quite the opposite, as many universities offer part-time degrees and distance learning.

Is university higher education?

Yes. There’s not much more we can add to this. What did you think university was?

Why is university so expensive?

Although it can be annoying, truth is there isn’t just one reason for university costing quite a lot of money. From expert lecturers and the reputation of that particular uni, to having free uni facilities at your disposal, paying campus rent as well as having the end product of a fancy new qualification, it all sadly can’t be given away for free. Soz about that.

But remember, your student loan will only be repaid when you hit a certain salary after you graduate, so try not to worry about it or let it hold you back too much. And if you’re still panicking about money, head to our dedicated section for more help.

Plus, you never know, scientists may invent a money tree someday soon.

Why is university called university?

It’s Latin for universitas. Which means a whole corporate body. Apparently.

Does it matter what university you go to?

Well, yes. Quite a lot actually. No we aren’t talking about rankings and the reputation of the uni (although that’s important too) but the university has to be right FOR YOU.

You need to find a uni that does the course you want, is in the location you want and will generally make you happy for the next few years. Luckily we can help you with that...
