University is known for being one big party, especially during the first year. But there are some people who go to uni that don’t enjoy drinking. If you’re one of them, don’t worry and don’t be nervous – you won’t be left out! There are hundreds of students who don’t engage with the ‘drinking culture’, and you’ll quickly find a group that you can socialise with without alcohol. Even if you do also become friends with people who love to drink, as long as you can enjoy yourself sober, then you’ll be fine. University is not about getting drunk everyday. Yes, you’re there to have fun and meet people, but most importantly you’re there to get a degree!

I spoke to a Southampton student, who wishes to remain anonymous, who had to be very careful with drinking at uni because her stomach can’t tolerate alcohol. ‘I drink every now and again but if I’m far from home I can’t risk drinking, as it may make me feel sick and ruin my night,’ she said. ‘I just never know how it’s going to affect me. My nan was the same – any alcohol, even wine, would make her go all red. Our stomachs just don’t tolerate it.

‘It never stopped me going out. My friends would peer pressure me, but they never said it horribly. They would just say, “Come on, have one with me”, but if anyone started trying to force me then I just wouldn’t be friends with them.’

26 non-alcoholic activities to try at uni

Even though there might be a smaller number of people that don’t drink, they still do want to have fun (but not necessarily be dragged out to the club to watch everyone wasted). There are loads of different activities that don’t require alcohol (just take a look at this list to give yourself a few ideas)...

1) Find a group/society that will fit you.

2) Bowling is always a good laugh.

3) So is ice-skating.

4) Have a movie night at home or go to the cinema.

5) Paintballing (if you’re a tough cookie).

6) Plan your own “Come Dine With Me” dinner party.

7) Check out if there are any concerts nearby.

8) See a musical.

9) Shopping is always fun!

10) Have a picnic in the park.

11) Go to a theme park.

12) Or, if you have the skills and luck, the arcade is always an option.

13) Go-carting.

14) Make non-alcoholic cocktails.

15) Play a board game.

16) Go to a casino – you might get lucky!

17) Go to a theatre.

18) How about Laser Tag?

19) Don’t just go swimming in a pool, go to a water park!

20) How about spa day with the girls?

21) Poker night.

22) Have a casual dinner in a restaurant.

23) A lot of pubs host quiz nights, why not get a team together and get involved?

24) Or maybe try a karaoke night?

25) Or a comedy night?

26) Instead of beer pong play water pong.
