The Deadline is Sooner Than You Think
Quite a few universities have deadlines that are just a few weeks into your Year 13 journey.
If you want to apply for
Oxford, Cambridge (also called Oxbridge by people who can’t be bothered to write both names, myself included) or anything medical or veterinary then you’ll only have till mid October of Year 13 to apply. Which means you’ll only be back in school for a mere four weeks before a deadline is upon you. Yes it’s really really unfair but thems the rules.
By starting these applications in particular you won’t be running around like a blindfolded duck in a barnyard when you enter your final year of sixth form.
Time to Craft a Perfect Personal Statement
personal statements is a risky move, and not in James Bond kind of risky move, a risky move that is unlikely to pay off. Personal statements can make or break your university offer, and so not something to do on as an all-nighter, no matter how good you’ve been at them in the past.
By starting to write your personal statement now you’ll learn what works, what doesn’t, get lots of second opinions and do as many drafts as you want until it feels ready to submit. Heck you can cover you bedroom floor in the old drafts if you want to write that many versions!
And it’ll be worth it, the admissions team will know if you’ve put in effort or just copied a template online, and yours will stand out for the right reasons.
More Open Day Opportunities
Prospectuses are a brilliant way of finding out which university or course is right for you, but they also tend to be filled with very attractive students, laughing on some sort of greenery on only sunny days, so you’re not really getting the full experience of the university.
This is why
open days are the perfect opportunity to learn about the course, the university and the real surroundings when the sun isn’t shining.
Start going to open days now and you won’t find yourself cramming university visits in nearer the deadline day, missing important ones or going from one end of the UK to the other within hours just so you can be sure about your choices.
Chances to Change Your Mind
Did you know that you can only apply for Oxford OR Cambridge? If you’re thinking of applying for one of the Oxbridge universities, you’ve now got over a year to chop and change your mind without consequences, so by the time the application deadline is approaching you’ll be sure of your decision.
Leave it till you start Year 13 and chances are you’ll be making a flustered decision which might not be in the right one.
Even if you don’t want to go to Oxbridge, taking time now to think about which university you want to go to will give you more time to research and apply, which is definitely not a bad thing.
If you won’t do it for us, do it for your family, teachers and friends. They’re the ones who will be nagging you until the week before the deadline, and then will have to hear you complain when you’re stressing out. It’s not as fun for them as it sounds...
