University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I’ve loved every second of being here (even the hungover days), and i’m disappointed how quickly it’s gone and how soon I will have to leave. The department and tutors are great, and very down to earth. The facilities are outstanding, I currently feel as though I have half the library’s worth of books on my bedroom desk. The careers center are so helpful and always sending emails, giving talks and providing information on part-time or full-time jobs, CV writing and much more. Finally Hall’s in first year, and my course, helped me makes tonnes of new friends and meet people.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Excellent. The brand-new Catalyst building has already improved my personal productivity, as it’s an extremely useful tool when it comes to provision or resources and staying focused. Besides, it’s pretty.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Within the Biology department specifically, tutors are very engaging and will always make sure students are going in the right direction, or help with coping with stress and workload. They also offer the option of feedback on all assignments, but draft and final versions, to help develop our learning and writing style.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
They’re very proactive and, more recently, have been pushing for societies to engage more by offering our “badges” (achievement recognitions for certain areas, e.g. the community engagement badge would be for hosting activities that get non-uni personnel/locations involved in the society)
Prices of drinks at the SU bar are concerningly high though.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Liverpool is a bit of a haul away, but the town, Ormskirk, is great. Its got a large number of places, such as restaurants, pubs and bars to go and socialize in, even if there may only be one night club which closes relatively early.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There is a wide range of societies at the university, ranging from sports (football, rubgy, cricket, netball etc), to science (biology, sustainability, and bees) and everything in between.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
As the department has only a few hundred students across the three year groups, there is a lot of face time with lectures. Staff make an effort to make sure everything is okay (both academically and personally) and always try to engage us in sessions.
It would help if there was maybe a little bit more in terms of lab work, as practical skills are key for a career in science.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
They offer Sandwich/year placements, ERASMUS opportunities, put on a number of careers fairs (both general and subject specific), offer CV and employability statement writing tips, a put on a number of sessions to help with general skills in the new Catalyst building
