University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I think my university experience has been very enriching and the positioning of the uni has made it easy to enjoy the local aspects of Ormskirk. The journey from uni to the town is pretty easy and it feel like it’s one big campus.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Extremely good, they have everything anyone would need to do any sport, study, and dance.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I think the campus life and wellbeing offices are very good with their response times however, sometimes some of their strategies have been ineffective for a few girls I know.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
I don’t understand the students union concept, nor did I realise there was any representation. But the SU bar and Venue are lovely for the socials on a Wednesday evening. They’re open till 1;00 and allow everyone to drink in a safe environment and get along with people of all ages.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The positioning of the uni is fantastic! It is a one minute, free bus ride from Ormskirk center. Cheap food shops such as Morrison’s and Aldi are close by and are friendly to the student budget. There are really lovely bars and one club for the evening which allows you to meet students from loads of different courses and they are budget friendly. The train station is a 250 yard walk from the bus station and that allows you to travel to Liverpool for as little at £2.50! This opens up other opportunities for evening activities, such as clubbing and junkyard golf. However, the only downside to this is that getting back to uni after 11:30 can cost between £25 and £40 for a taxi, unless you’d like to stay out until 6:00 for the first train home. With these facts in mind I think the positioning of edge hill uni is very nice. For year 2 some people go to live in the center of Liverpool and use their cars for travel, with this in mind, I think that they should try and create even more car parks, or be allowed to create a multi story on the big car park. A friend on my course takes 2 hours a day to get parked on the furthest away car park of them all. She has to plan for parking time as well as travel time to get to her lessons. Further more, she has on the tennis courts that are far away from the buildings and feel obsolete and bleak at night, and when we finish at 8:00 she can often feel nervous walking to her car. I would personally love to have my car so I can go home easily and see my family regularly. It also would make going food shopping easier and going to Liverpool or Manchester easy, but I know with the current parking conditions this won’t be possible. On terms of accommodation, I think that some of the rooms are amazing and some of them are below average. I was based in main halls, John Dalton, the carpets were mouldy, there were leaks in the ceiling, the corridors smelt mouldy and the kitchen always smelt bad. The shared facilities weren’t cleaned daily and were often in an extremely grim condition. However in palatine it’s like a different world for only £15 more a week. The new main halls, clough, which have a washing machine in the kitchen, brand new sofas and showers with seals so the bathrooms don’t flood, by comparison, are cheaper than John Dalton!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
The selection of societies is very good and the sports activities are amazing. The facilities for these societies are very advanced and allow the university to add multiple societies that the students think of.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
For musical theatre I think it is ridiculous that we only have 12 contact hours a week with only 7 of them being practical. I think there should be a lot more training in this course and more dance hours. When people are looking for people to employ in musical theatre, they look for people who can dance and then hear weather you can sing and act. If we aren’t taught enough dance when we have less chance for employability.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
For my course you can do a sandwich year in year 3 in another country. This would hopefully allow you to experience broadway and america and there are constantly opportunities to work abroad. However I think the different between the placements in our course and nursing for example are extreme, girls in my flat in nursing have had 4 placements in year one alone since April, but musical theatre doesn’t have any until year 2 or 3, this gives you less opportunity to improve emplyablility, but more time to train.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I think the cost is very reasonable, but the safety conditions - as it’s an open campus - are concerning. There have been multiple break ins recently and armed robberies. Security responded quickly but the fact that drink people who live in halls let random people in is very scary at times. Having said this, I don’t know how this aspect of security can be improved.
