SOAS, University of London

SOAS, University of London is the world’s leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

It is a remarkable place in which to study, with a special atmosphere: distinctive, quirky, passionate and critical. It is a place that dares to be a little different.

With a vibrant central London campus, SOAS forms an intimate community at the heart of the university quarter of historic Bloomsbury.  London was voted one of the top destinations in the QS Top Universities Guide Best Student Cities.  With its world-famous museums, art galleries, restaurants, shops and theatres there is no shortage of entertainment within easy walking distance of the university campus.

We live in a world of shrinking borders and of economic and technological simultaneity.  Yet it is also a world in which difference and regionalism present themselves acutely.  It is a world that SOAS is distinctively positioned to analyse, understand and explain.

On the one hand, this means that SOAS scholars grapple with pressing issues - democracy, development, human rights, identity, legal systems, poverty, religion, social change - confronting two-thirds of humankind, while at the same time remaining guardians of specialised knowledge in languages and periods and regions not available anywhere else in the UK.

Additionally, our academic focus on the languages, cultures and societies of Africa, Asia and the Middle East makes us an indispensable interpreter in a complex world, and our Language Centre offers short courses on a wide range of world languages.

SOAS has a long and distinguished history of widening the horizons of its students and helping them to gain the skills needed for careers in an increasingly international environment.

SOAS graduates have gone on to exciting and varied careers in government; the media; law; development; finance; translation work; international relations; and higher education.

As SOAS looks ahead to its centenary in 2016 it looks forward to welcoming a future generation of students to discover that the world truly meets at SOAS.
