UNIVERSITY PROFILE

Overview

Sunderland: world-leading facilities and a growing reputation for teaching and research.

  • Best new university in the North East, according to the Guardian University Guide 2012
  • 'World leading' research in 10 subjects, according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008)
  • Student Experience Winner at the Times Higher Education Awards 2010

Students come to Sunderland for the quality of the education, but quality of life is also a big attraction. Cost of living in the north east of England is amongst the lowest in the country, and miles of beautiful coastline and countryside are within minutes from the city.

Excellent facilities

We've recently invested £130 million in our campuses. Highlights of the campus developments include:

  • £20m media arts centre, featuring a 200-seat HD cinema and 4,600m² of TV and radio studios, workshops and editing suites
  • £12m sports centre opened in 2009, chosen as a pre-Olympic training centre for the 2012 Olympics
  • £8.5m Sciences Complex, opened in 2011

The faculties are spread over two campuses: City Campus and the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, which is just five minutes away from miles of beautiful sandy beach.
