In the UK, postgraduate courses tend to be split into those that are largely taught (MA,MSc, PGDip) and those that are largely research-based (MPhil, PhD). Postgraduate taught courses provide the widest choice. Most postgraduates in the UK are studying for master's qualifications lasting one or two years. The most advanced form of postgraduate research is postgraduate doctoral work, which is intensive and needs strong commitment in terms of time, dedication and finance. Full-time study at this level will take at least three years.
