What's this course about?

Environmental science is about understanding how the planet works in providing resources and absorbing our actions. Industries and governments want to reduce their impact on the environment. They need professionals familiar with: interactions between natural systems; development of sustainable management of natural resources, waste and energy; past, present, future human influences on the environment; a broad knowledge of environmental changes, natural hazards and disasters. Students will develop an understanding of natural environmental processes and environmental techniques and prepare for careers in the utilities and conservation industries. They study the environment and environmental systems from natural and social science perspectives, attending seminars, labs and field trips. They can also enhance their career prospects with a year’s placement with organisations such as British Energy and Natural England. To study environmental science on a course prepares them as a professional environmental manager, consultant or scientist. They become familiar with natural environmental processes as well as the latest environmental techniques. The interdisciplinary nature of this subject encourages an understanding of principles from the natural and the social sciences. They also develop professional skills in areas including report writing, presentations and information technology.

The stats below refer to the subject of study at university rather than to the specific course or mode of study. For example, "German and Scandinavian Studies" refers to all students who have studied either German or a Scandinavian subject, either singly or in any combination with any other subject. Where there is not enough data to be meaningful for a subject, the statistics are collated with similar subjects. In the case of Scandinavian Studies, this would be Modern European Languages, and if there wasn't enough data for Modern European Languages, then this would be collated across All Languages.
