- Actuarial Science involves the application of quantitative skills to problems which normally involve risk or uncertainty, together with finance. The programme at Cass gives you a sound education in actuarial and financial studies, mathematics, statistics and IT, and enables you to develop the communication skills prized by the actuarial profession. The programme provides an excellent basis for a career as an actuary or in other areas of financial management, for example, investment management or financial analysis. The five main areas of study are: actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, economics and finance. Key subjects over the three years are financial and investment mathematics, insurance mathematics, financial economics and statistics and probabilistic modelling in insurance. The programme comprises compulsory core modules, which give you essential knowledge and skills; and electives, which enable you to focus your studies on the areas relevant to your career aspirations. As you progress through the course from years 1 to 3, the number of electives increases. A foreign language course (French, German or Spanish for Business) is also an option in your second or final year, provided you have an A-level or equivalent qualification in the relevant language. In order to qualify as an actuary, you will be required to pass the professional examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Specific modules in all three years of the Cass degree give you the opportunity to earn exemptions from eight of a total of fifteen of these professional examinations - the maximum possible from an undergraduate degree. Final year modules also give an excellent introduction to four of the subjects from which the remaining professional examinations are selected. This gives you a significant head start in your career.
