Studying pediatrics

Pediatrics is a medical specialism focused on the healthcare of infants, children, and adolescents. To become a pediatrician, students will first need to complete a medical degree before undertaking a two-year paid foundation programme which includes six work placements in a variety of workplaces. After this foundation programme, students begin training to become a qualified paediatrician, which takes a minimum of eight years. In this time, students will cover a wide range of topics including emergency care, neonatology, obstetric pharmacology, cardiology, and genetics of common and rare diseases. Once qualified, paediatricians enjoy a large array of professional specialisms, such as neonatalist, oncologist, cardiologist, and critical care medicine.
